BAPTISM
Baptism is the next step after receiving the gift of salvation. It is an outward expression of an inward transformation that begins when you put your faith in Jesus as your personal saviour. Being fully immersed in the water then rising out symbolises you have unified with Jesus' death & resurrection. This is a public declaration that you are now a follower of Christ and identify as part of His family, the Church.

Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Romans 6:3
Why should I get baptised?
Imitation & Instruction
Baptism is symbolic and while it does not save you, it shows you have been saved. Because of the beautiful picture baptism illustrates, we see it as an honor to display the gospel in this way.

At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus was baptised and we are called to be imitators of Christ. At the end of his ministry, his final instructions to his followers is to "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you'' - Matthew 28:19-20.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
Matthew 3:13-17, The Baptism of Jesus
Am I Ready?
Identification not perfection
Being ready is not about perfection, or feeling as though you are good enough to identify as a Christ-follower. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And it is not your own doing, it is the gift of God". - Ephesians 2:8. By waiting until we feel "good enough", we are believing that our works can save us. This minimizes the grace and power of the cross.

Baptism is for every person who has made a decision to put their faith in Jesus.

Are you ready to be baptised?
If you aren't sure still, this quiz may help you to better understand if you are ready to be baptised.

Have you experienced a realization of your own sin and brokenness?
Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God".

1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
We believe our deepest problem is our disconnection from our Creator. Instead of living according to his design, we have lived our own way. Sin is choosing 'my way' over God's way. Repentance is turning 180 degrees. It starts with a humble realization we are going the wrong way, a genuine sorrow and a realization that we need a saviour.

There will be an opportunity to discuss this further at the Baptism Preparation.

Do you believe that Jesus is the only Son of God and died for your sins?
John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life". This is God's gift of salvation.
We believe the price of sin is eternal separation from God (i.e. death). Nothing we do could take our sins away. Even the Old Testament sacrifices were just accumulating a debt. "It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins." - Hebrews 10:4

Only Jesus, the Son of God could pay the price.

Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is God's gift of salvation.

This topic will be discussed during Baptism Preparation - Week 2.

Have you made a decision to accept God's gift of salvation and put your faith in Jesus?
Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
We believe no amount of good works could ever make us good enough to get to God. Faith in Jesus means we stop relying on ourselves and instead trust what He has done for us. He has given us his righteousness and died the death we deserved.

Hebrews 10:14 & 17 says, "For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy."..."Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."

Do you have a desire to put Jesus first in your life?
Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths."

Matthew 10:39 says, "Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it."
We believe that when we put Jesus first, everything else in life is put into perspective. To do this, we choose God's way (which we discover through his Word) over our way.

However, this is a lifelong journey of a Christian, empowered by the Holy Spirit. It's not about perfect obedience but starts with a desire and commitment.

Have you begun any of the following because of a desire to grow in relationship with Jesus?

  • Regularly attend Sunday Services
  • Attempt to read the Bible
  • Attempt to Pray

  • Serve in a team
In John 15:5, Jesus says, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."
We believe the Christian life is not about religion but relationship with Jesus. Our aim is to not just know about Him, but to know and experience Him personally. In Philippians 3:8-10, Paul says, "Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

Do you want to identify with the life, death and resurrection of Jesus?
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"
Baptism is a symbol of Jesus' death and resurrection. Identifying with this means we have made the decision to die to our old selves and live out our new life in Christ.

In Luke 9:23, Jesus said to the crowd, "whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

Are you ready to identify as a member of the body of Christ, The Church?
Ephesians 2:19 says, "so then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household…"
We believe we were created for community and the New Testament gives us the picture that the church is so connected, they are like one body. When we are baptised, we join the church family. Together, we display His love and accomplish His mission.

1 Corinthians 12:13 says, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body…"
